Although the world is largely shifting back to being in-person, a lot of office workers still opt for working at home. We found, through empathy fieldwork, that a lot of those who work from home (WFH) are not taking time for self care, especially doing the small things such as drinking water.

Our product, the Hydraplant, aims to target that. We designed a mechanical plant that blooms as you drink water. Over time, if you forget to drink water, the plant begins to wilt, reminding you to drink water once again. By drinking water, the user would be boosting their mental and physical wellbeing.

We hope that with this product, we can navigate a healthier and happier new normal.

Desktop Lightshow

Video Link

Four bar linkages in general can convert rotational motion to reciprocating motion, convert reciprocating motion to rotational motion, constrain motion, and magnify force. In the case of C3, the rotational motion of the handle converts the back shorter vertical bar to a reciprocating motion. Because of the curvature of the two longer bars, the machine moves in a non-planar behavior.

Protostand

Product Video

For Mechancial Synthesis (MAE 2250) we had an original design project where the prompt was something for a hobby we wouldn’t try. My partner and I decided to create something that would simplify the set up for practicing and performing with the guzheng. (A 1.6m long, 21 string instrument) It’s so big and bulky, it usually requires two stands to hold the instrument up and a custom chair to match the height.

We came up with the Protostand with 3 design choices in mind:

Adjustable: Using telescoping rods users are able to change the height and width of the stands or how far away the chair is

Portable: Everything is collapsible and fits into 1 bag, and everything should take as much time as a normal stand to set up, if not faster. The telescoping rods are aluminum so it’s light but sturdy.

Comfortable: The chair would be made with a webbed mesh that has breathability and support, and allowing more adjustment would improve the posture of the player

Note: as this protion of the project happened during the pandemic, only a paper prototype was able to be created.

Water Pump

For the water pump project, we designed a double acting, double piston water pump.
